Unravel 2 - Coldwood Interactive & EA Games

Whilst working at Spov, EA Coldwood asked the studio to create two cinematics bookending their game Unravel 2.

I had the pleasure of leading the project, and bringing in a team to support the clients vision.

As a studio we were given storyboards from the creator of Yarny at Coldwood. Our job was to animate Yarny surviving a terrible storm, through to the spark of Yarny dissolving monsters away, inside of a lighthouse. Dissolving them from smokey evil, to threads of Yarny goodness! Using pathetic fallacy to bring the storm to an end, resulting in a story that signifies good triumphing over evil.

A Behind the scenes process and breakdown video I created whilst working at Spov to show the vast amount of work that went into the Intro + Outro Animations.

It also aims to demonstate the pipline set up, to show development through the stages of previs block out animatic, to a first pass lighting render, all the way to final composite.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities

Skills - Managing a team over at Spov, and liaising with the client directly about progress.

Creating the ocean in Cinema 4D using Hot 4d, and wave deformer. Attaching the Yarny threads to the ocean, using spline dynamics and a plugin for C4D called Reeper.

Simulation of the monsters, once the character animation was complete, it was baked, and then the geometry used as an emitter in TFD, with a bespoke custom shader matching the games monsters.

Dissolving the monsters from TFD smoke to X-Particles forming a bundle of wool, resolving the Yarny.

Pipeline testing between Maya and C4D for the ocean and character animation imports. Management of the render farm, and compositing the passes and adding FX in a linear workflow using After Effects.

Software - Cinema 4D, Arnold Renderer, After Effects, Hot 4D, Wave Deformer, X-Particles, Turbulence FD, Trapcode Particular, Trapcode Form, Optical Flares, Saphire FX, Reeper.
